College Football Week 11 Review

Week 11 did not disappoint, with some incredible games features national contenders. LSU stole the headlines with their win over Alabama, with Minnesota also getting publicity for their upset win over Penn State. Let’s look at the main talking points from a fascinating week of college football.

1) LSU Seal Historic Win Over Alabama

Alabama have been the top dog of college football for a decade now, but this past weekend LSU toppled Bama in Bryant-Denny stadium. It was the Tigers first win over Alabama since 2011, and has massive play-off implications.

LSU overpowered Alabama 46-41, with quarterback Joe Burrow silencing the last of his doubters with a incredible performance against a Bama defense loaded with NFL talent. 393 yards and 3 TD’s along with 64 rushing yards was enough to punish Alabama, who made some uncharacteristic errors in this one. LSU still has to face Ole Miss and Texas A&M, but their path to a national title is in their hands.

2) LSU Solidified as Number One

The first College Football Play-off rankings made some headlines last week, as they anointed Ohio State number one over LSU. After their win against a third ranked Alabama on the road, there will be no doubt LSU returns to number one this week.

Ohio State look very good this year, but LSU now has four wins against top ten teams, something no other play-off team can match for strength of schedule. For Alabama a play-off berth is still within reach, but it needs other contenders to lose down the stretch.

3) Minnesota Spring Upset on Penn State

Despite the massive hype surrounding the LSU – Alabama game, Minnesota still managed to steal some headlines with their massive upset win. The undefeated Golden Gophers took down the fourth ranked Penn State 31-26, a win that has vaulted them to national attention.

Head coach P.J Fleck signed a seven-year contract extension worth $33.25 million, to ward off potential interest from bigger schools like Florida State. Minnesota have now jumped to seventh in the latest AP Poll, and if they remain unbeaten this year could find themselves in the hunt for a national title.

4) P.J Fleck on National Radar After Win

One of the hottest names in college coaching right now is P.J Fleck, who only enhanced his reputation with a upset win over Penn State. The Minnesota head coach is now 9-0 this year, and his team are ranked in the top ten for the first time since 1962.

Fleck recently signed a long-term extension at Minnesota, after being touted for the vacant Florida State job. With other top line programs like Tennessee and USC struggling, it’s clear Fleck will have coaching offers in the years to come. Him and his team have captured the nations attention this year.

5) Baylor Survives TCU

Baylor survived it’s first major test of the season, overcoming TCU 29-23 in triple overtime. Baylor have made a comeback this year, at 9-0 and ranked 12th in the nation. This wasn’t a vintage Baylor performance, but they survived a tough road game with a win.

TCU did a good job stopping the high powered Baylor offense, limiting them to less then 300 total yards. The win keeps Baylor in the Big Ten title hunt, but first they must overcome two very tough games ahead.

6) Tough Schedule for Baylor

Baylor sits at 9-0 atop the Big 12 standings, but their perfect season ends on a much tougher note. They did well to overcome TCU, but now face Oklahoma and Texas in the next two weeks.

The game against Oklahoma should be a high scoring affair, but despite a good offense they can’t match the weapons Oklahoma has. Texas will also be a tough test, despite their 6-3 record. Considering in their last two games Baylor have struggled against 4-5 TCU and 3-6 West Virginia, the next two weeks will show how talented this team really is.

7) Weekend Roundup

This past weekend was arguably the biggest of the season, with plenty more games that had interesting storylines. Oklahoma were a failed two-point conversion away from falling to Iowa State, a loss that would have ruined their faint hopes of a play-off berth.

13th ranked Wisconsin overcame 18th ranked Iowa 24-22. They relied on running back Jonathan Taylor, who gashed the usually stout Iowa defense for 250 yards on 31 carries. Taylor is the focal point of this Wisconsin offense, and they needed every one of those yards to beat Iowa.

8) Chase Young Latest

Heading into last weekend’s games the chatter was surrounding Ohio State player Chase Young. The stud defensive end was suspended this past weekend, pending a NCAA investigation into a loan he acquired from a family friend in 2018.

He says the loan was to buy a plane ticket for his girlfriend to watch him play in the Rose Bowl, and that he paid the loan back swiftly after. Ohio State pummeled Maryland 73-14 without him, but they’ll need him in the play-off run, as he absence could drag on much later in the season.

9) AP Top 25 Poll

The week 12 AP Top 25 poll has been released, with no surprise that LSU is on top. Ohio State is second, with Clemson and Alabama rounding out the top four play-off places. Georgia and Oregon are close behind in fifth and sixth, with Minnesota the biggest riser to seventh. Utah, Penn State and Oklahoma round out the top ten.

Florida, Baylor and Auburn come next, with Michigan staying in 14th. Wisconsin swaps places with Notre Dame to round out the top 15. Texas jumps back into the top 25 in 22nd at 6-3, with Iowa slipping to 23rd. Indiana and Oklahoma State are the other newcomers in 24th and 25th respectively.

10) Arkansas Fires Chad Morris

Sadly another football coach was fired this past weekend, with Arkansas dismissing Chad Morris, less than two years after hiring him. His record was a lowly 4-18, and went winless in 14 SEC games. Since taking over in December 2017, they have been the bottom feeder of the SEC and have made no sign of obvious progress under Morris.

Tight ends coach and special teams coordinator Barry Lunney Jr will serve as interim head coach until the end of the season. Early names being linked with the job include Memphis head coach Mike Norvell, Bill Clark at UAB and Eli Drinkwitz at Appalachian State.

That wraps up my review of week 11 of college football, a massive thank you to everyone who read this blog I really appreciate it. If you have any thoughts either comment below or find me on Twitter @JWjournalism.

College Football Week Eleven Preview

This weekend has been eagerly anticipated since the early weeks of the season, and that’s for one reason. Second ranked LSU travels to Tuscaloosa to face third ranked Alabama, for the most important game of the college football season. Their is also a battle of two unbeaten sides, and a state rivalry game too. Let’s look at the main talking points heading into a massive weekend of college football.

1) LSU – Alabama Preview

LSU heads to Alabama hoping to shock the world, in a true clash of the titans. Both are ranked in the top four, with the winner almost certainly jumping to number one. LSU are the surprise package with Joe Burrow, who is having a career year. Over 2,800 yards with 30 TD’s to four interceptions in eight games explains why he is shooting up NFL Draft boards.

Alabama star QB Tua Tagovailoa returns after undergoing ankle surgery, which is the only concern for Bama. LSU have lost starting linebacker Michael Divinity for personal reasons. Watching the Alabama receiver trio battle a loaded LSU secondary will the matchup to watch.

2) LSU Starting Linebacker Leaves Team

LSU announced on Monday that starting linebacker Michael Divinity has left the team for personal reasons. Both sides haven’t ruled out his return later this season, but he is still a big loss for the Tigers.

In five games this season he leads the team with three sacks and also recorded four tackles for loss. It’s unclear if he absence is because of injury or discipline problems. Head coach Ed Orgeron has said backup’s Andre Anthony and Ray Thornton will step up in his absence. This is a big loss for LSU, especially on the eve of their biggest game in years.

3) Penn State – Minnesota Preview

This is an intriguing matchup of two unbeaten teams, with fourth ranked Penn State travelling to Minnesota. The 17th ranked Gophers have surprised many with their 8-0 start, but this is by far their toughest test.

Penn State have had the headlines stolen by LSU and Alabama, but have quietly enjoyed a very good season. Both are complete teams, especially on defense with both units ranked in the top 15.  Despite home field advantage, Penn State should have enough to overcome a very good Minnesota team.

4) Battle of the Unbeaten Teams

On any other weekend this would be the marquee game, but it stands in the shadows of the LSU – Alabama matchup. Both teams are very good, especially on defense. Penn State sophomore Sean Clifford has emerged, with over 1,900 yards along with 20 TD’s to three interceptions all year. He is helped by receiver KJ Hamler, who is 13th in the nation with eight touchdowns in as many games.

Minnesota has some offensive studs too, with running back Rodney Smith leading the way. He is on pace for a 1,500 yard season. The Gophers also have receiver duo Rashod Bateman and Tyler Johnson, both with over 600 yards already.

5) Baylor – TCU Preview

This Texas rivalry has a lot on the line for both teams. Undefeated 12th ranked Baylor has a short road journey to TCU, for a game with all the hallmarks of being an upset. TCU has fallen off this season, currently with a 4-4 record. Baylor is 8-0, however their only marquee wins have come against Iowa State at home and on the road to Kansas State.

Baylor is marginally better on offense, currently averaging 480 yards of offense compared to TCU’s 441 yards. On defense it’s TCU that is marginally better however. In a hostile atmosphere Baylor will have to be at their best to avoid an upset here.

6) Toughest Game yet for Unbeaten Baylor

Baylor are having a great season at 8-0 and ranked inside the top 15, but some question their strength of schedule in the Big 12. Baylor’s top wins are Iowa State and Kansas State, and in their previous game sneaked past a 3-5 West Virginia team.

This TCU matchup is the first of a nightmare three-game stretch in which they play TCU on the road and face both Oklahoma and Texas at home. TCU is only 4-4 but they can easily cause an upset and derail Baylor’s season with a win here. A lot rests on this game for Baylor.

7) Iowa – Wisconsin Preview

The big games keep on coming this weekend, with another intriguing matchup between two ranked teams. 18th ranked Iowa travel to face 13th ranked Wisconsin, similarly matched with 6-2 records.

Wisconsin is looking to rebound after two tough losses, and with home field advantage they should feel confident. Iowa has recovered from their two losses, and this game will likely decide the Big Ten West.  Iowa has seemed a little flat this year, with a top six defense making up for their 81st ranked offense. Expect this to be a low-scoring defensive slug fest.

8) Jonathan Taylor Looking to Rebound

The Ohio State defense smothered Jonathan Taylor in their last game, holding the star running back to 52 yards on 20 carries. These are rough stats for a player who will be a first round NFL Draft pick in 2020 if he declares.

The junior running back is a household name in college football thanks to his immense production, currently at 5,180 yards in less than three years. The fact he has 1,009 yards in eight games in what is being called a down year shows just how effective he’s been. The Iowa defense is a top unit, but he should get more action then he did against the Buckeyes.

NCAA Football: Kent State at Wisconsin

9) Other Games to Watch

In such a loaded week of college football, these games will go under the radar but will be worth watching. Ninth ranked Oklahoma welcome Iowa State, for a game the Cyclones have made a trap game in recent years. Oklahoma are rebounding from a tough loss, and Matt Campbell has made a habit of upset wins against ranked opponents.

Other games to watch include 16th ranked Kansas State travelling to face a good Texas Longhorns team, and 19th ranked Wake Forest travelling to face a good Virginia Tech team.

10) Chase Young Suspended for Potential NCAA Violation

Stud Ohio State defensive end Chase Young is suspended for this weekend’s game against Maryland, as the school investigates a potential NCAA violation. It appears the issue is a loan he received from a family friend last year. This could end his college football career, as he may miss the rest of this season and is likely to declare for the 2020 NFL Draft.

Young has been the best defensive player in college football this year, and leads the nation with 13.5 sacks. He also have five forced fumbles, and has been key to a Ohio State defensive unit that ranks second in the nation.

That wraps up my preview of a loaded weekend of college football action, if you have any thoughts about it let me know down below or find me on Twitter @JWjournalism. Finally, a massive thank you to everyone who read this blog I really appreciate it!

College Football Week Ten Review

This past weekend saw yet more action from the college football world, with some big wins for top ten programs, a lopsided rivalry game and a Saturday night shootout. Entering November the end is in sight for the contenders, yet there is still plenty of potential banana skins should they struggle. Let’s take a look at the main talking points from this past weekend.

1) Georgia Topples Florida

The self-titled “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” was won by Georgia for the second year running, overcoming a resilient Florida side 24-17. The scoreline suggests it was a close game, but Georgia always looked fairly comfortable.

Both teams defense’s stood out, with the key to victory being Jake Fromm and the Georgia offense. D’Andre Swift had another good game, and his running opened up the rest of the offense. The game was not without it’s controversial moments, but Georgia passed this huge test against a good Florida team.

2) Georgia Win Massive for Their Season

Beating Florida was a must for Georgia, who have recovered well since losing to South Carolina two weeks ago. This win solidifies them atop the SEC East, and was vital to remain in play-off contention.

Georgia rose to sixth in the AP Top 25 after this win, but they face a tough end to the season. They travel to 12th ranked Auburn and host a good Texas A&M team. To get into the play-off places they must win out and hope those above them slip up.

3) Oregon Blows Out USC

Oregon put USC to the sword on Saturday, routing the storied program 56-14. Quarterback Justin Herbert threw three touchdown passes to receiver Juwan Johnson, also showing they aren’t done with their play-off ambitions.

The Trojans have been inconsistent all season, and they laid an egg in this one. True freshman Kedon Slovis threw three picks, and were dominated as the scoreline suggests. Oregon are going to win the Pac-12 North, with USC now almost certainly out of contention for the Pac-12 South at 5-4.

4) Tough Times Ahead for USC

The USC Trojans are one of the legacy programs of college football. They have won eleven national titles and have produced the most NFL Draft picks of any school. 2019 has not been kind to USC however, as they appear to be heading towards a crisis.

Earlier this year Athletic Director and former storied player Lynn Swann resigned, and now it appears likely head coach Clay Helton will be fired at the end of the season too. At 5-4 they won’t win the Pac-12 South, and their 2020 recruiting class is currently ranked 66th, and 10th in the Pac-12. The future doesn’t look bright for USC.

5) Memphis Wins Barn Burner

The entertaining game of the weekend was undoubtedly this AAC Saturday night matchup, with Memphis outlasting SMU 54-48. Both Quarterbacks combined for over 800 passing yards, as both defenses got torched.

Memphis came out on top, in a game they had the better of. All the talk heading into it was about SMU and their unbeaten record, well now Memphis has risen above them to 19th in the AP Top 25 polls.  Both teams have tough games ahead, with Memphis facing Cincinnati and SMU facing Navy as they fight for the AAC West.

6) SMU Upset Dreams in Tatters

SMU were the talk of the college football world last weekend, with a top 15 AP ranking and an unbeaten 8-0 record. With the national spotlight on them, they came up short in a tough matchup in Memphis. If they would of remained unbeaten all season people would of been speculating on a potential top ten ranking and prominent bowl game.

All of this is now over, as with one loss they have fallen dramatically. They have now dropped eight places to 23rd in the AP poll, and have surrendered control of their division to Memphis. With a tough game against Navy two weeks away, they need to regroup fast.

7) Miami Rolls Over FSU

Both sides needed a win here to save their season, but only team played like they knew this. Miami dominated Florida State 27-10 in Tallahassee, however the scoreline doesn’t reflect how dominant Miami was. Quarterback Jarren Williams had his best game, passing for 313 yards and two touchdowns.

The Miami defense strangled FSU, containing star Running Back Cam Akers to 66 yards and sacking QB Alex Hornibrook nine times. The Hurricanes have been poor this season, but Florida State looked beyond help in this game. Both teams needs a lot of help to regain their former glory, but Miami was a class above in this game.

8) Florida State Fire Willie Taggart

The repercussions were swift after this game, with Florida State announcing on Sunday they had fired head coach Willie Taggart. He was only halfway through his second season, but with a 9-12 overall record he was swiftly fired. The university alumni donated the $18 million dollar buyout of his contract, showing their contempt for him.

This job is not as prestigious as it was five years ago, with some of the names being linked with job reflecting this. The school is being linked with mid-range college head coaches, something the fans won’t support. The school has a long road to recovery for sure.

9) Weekend Roundup

With the top three all on bye weeks, the focus shifted to those lower down the top ten. Ninth ranked Utah overcame a very tough trip to Washington 33-28, which extends their commanding Pac-12 South lead. 11th ranked Auburn made tough work of beating Ole Miss, with the 20-14 win in doubt right up to the final seconds.

16th ranked Notre Dame also struggled, only just overcoming Virginia Tech 21-20. 14th Michigan routed Maryland 38-7 to continue their upward trajectory, and 22nd Kansas State ran over rival Kansas 38-10.

10) AP Top 25

The top five remain unchanged this week, as only fourth and fifth ranked Clemson and Penn State played. Georgia rise to sixth after their win against Florida, with Utah and Oklahoma moving up as the Gators drop to tenth. Baylor sneaks up to 11th at 8-0, as Auburn head the rest of the two loss teams in 12th.

Memphis is the big riser this week, going from 24th to 19th after their primetime win. Kansas State jumps past Boise State for 20th. The only new entry this week is Navy in 25th, with Appalachian State falling from 20th as their unbeaten season went in a 24-21 loss to Georgia Southern.

That wraps up my recap from week ten of college football, if you have any comments on this piece comment below or find me on Twitter @JWjournalism. Finally, a massive thank you to everyone who read this article I really appreciate it!

College Football Week Ten Preview

Another weekend of college football is upon us, with another exciting slate of games that will keep fans glued to the TV on Saturday. This week see’s a top ten matchup with play-off implications, a historic rivalry game and some upset of the week games that will have a massive conference impact. Let’s look ahead to week ten of college football.

1) Georgia – Florida Matchup

The annual matchup of Georgia and Florida is especially important this year. Eighth ranked Georgia roll into Florida to face the sixth ranked Gators. Both are one-loss teams, and the winner of this game will likely win the SEC East.

Georgia need big performances from Quarterback Jake Fromm and Running Back D’Andre Swift, facing a hostile crowd and a top 25 defense in Florida. Kyle Trask has played lights out since taking over, but will need support with the seventh ranked Georgia defense hunting him. This game should be a low scoring affair.

2) Both Teams Need Win to Save Their Season

This matchup is the most competitive it’s been in years, as both sides need this win to remain in contention for the National Championship. Florida have played well all season, with their only loss coming against a very good LSU team.

Georgia’s loss to unranked South Carolina is much less impressive, but they have phenomenal talent, starting with Running Back D’Andre Swift. Both sides always churn out NFL talent, and plenty will be on display. Florida has an easier schedule going forward, but with one loss already both sides badly need this win.

3) Oregon – USC Preview

Saturday night see’s one of the premier games of the week, with this massive Pac-12 showdown. Seventh ranked Oregon travel to the Coliseum to face an unpredictable USC team. This game has massive conference implications, with both currently leading their division.

Oregon is the fancied pick, and should overcome USC. This USC team however is very hard to gauge, with a 5-3 record, yet they toppled ninth ranked Utah in week four. Freshman Kedon Slovis has played well, and will need a big game from senior receiver Michael Pittman Jr if they have any chance of winning.

4) Massive Pac-12 Weekend

The Pac-12 struggles for national recognition because of the vagaries of time zone changes within America. Often pushed to late Saturday night, this week the Pac-12 should take center stage with two massive games.

Oregon is the only hope of a Pac-12 team making the play-off, and their game against a storied USC program is a massive potential banana skin for them. Before this game ninth ranked Utah faces a very good Washington side, as the Utes fight for their division.

5) Utah – Washington Preview

As I mentioned above, this Utah – Washington game is another massive Pac-12 matchup. Utah are a very good team who have climbed back from their loss to USC, with the ninth ranking and co-lead of the Pac-12 South.

Washington are much like USC, namely unpredictable. They sit at 5-3, yet just last week took a top ten Oregon team very close in a 35-31 loss. Quarterback Jacob Eason is much hyped and will likely be a first round draft pick. If Washington can play at their best, they can cause a massive upset here.

jacob-eason-washington

Jacob Eason has all the talent to win in the NFL, but Washington has flattered to deceive in 2019. Will he return to Washington or declare for the 2020 NFL Draft. Photo: CBS Sports.com.

6) Quarterbacks Key to This Game

I know this sounds like an obvious title, what with it being the most important position, but a lot rests on these two signal callers. Jacob Eason has more national recognition, and has all of the physical tools to be a future NFL starter.

Although pundits expected more from Washington this year Eason has played well in his first year playing since transferring from Georgia. Utah senior QB Tyler Huntley has performed solidly all year, with only one interception in eight games. He faces a very good Washington secondary this week, so that number may change.

7) SMU – Memphis Getting National Attention

After both have enjoyed brilliant seasons, the national attention is focused on this SMU – Memphis game. The College Gameday crew are showing up in Memphis, for this massive AAC contest.

SMU are back in the top 15 for the first time since the 1980s after an 8-0 start, thanks to lights out play from an SMU offense that’s tenth in the nation, averaging over 500 yards a game. Memphis are 24th ranked, and also have a very good offense, currently 23rd with 470 yards a game. Both have good skill position players, and this should be a fun shootout for sure.

8) Miami – Florida State Rivalry Game

For decades these sides have despised each other, with this latest installment coming from Tallahassee. Both sides have struggled this season, with both former powerhouses sat at 4-4 and close to missing out on bowl eligibility.

This game will not be pretty, with both offenses lacing production this season. Florida State does have the more talented skill position players, but faces a top 15 ranked Miami defense that has been forced to play hard all year to mask the offensive struggles. Anything can and usually does happen in this rivalry game that is way too close to call.

Miami claimed a tight 28-27 win against biggest rivals Florida State this year, but with their poor start and it being in Tallahassee can they repeat their victory? Photo: David Santiago/ Miami Herald via AP.

9) Miami – Florida State at Lowest Point in Years

This matchup used to decide national title berths, in the heyday of the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. Both however have fallen off in recent years, reaching it’s lowest point in a while this year.

Both are currently 4-4 and are scrambling to even make a bowl game this season. Manny Diaz has struggled in his first year as he rebuilds Miami, with Willie Taggart fighting to save his job at Florida State in only his second season. Both look years away from returning to the top, with massive rebuilding work needed at both schools.

10) Baylor Survives West Virginia

The opening game of the weekend on Thursday night saw 12th ranked Baylor survive a close 17-14 win over a struggling West Virginia team. Baylor now improves to 8-0, but received a scare on Halloween as they came a blocked Field Goal away from going to overtime.

This wasn’t a vintage Baylor performance, but they got the win, the mark of a strong team. They could jump into the top ten, but now enter a horrible stretch as they face TCU, Oklahoma and Texas. Their unbeaten run will end but they still have a chance of making the Big 12 Championship game.

That wraps up my preview for week ten of college football, with plenty of intrigue and exciting games to keep fans happy. If you have any thoughts on these games leave a comment below or find me on Twitter @JWjournalism. Finally, a massive thank you to everyone who read this article I really appreciate it!

College Football Week Nine Review

After several weeks away a lot has changed in the college football landscape. We are now reaching the dog days of the season as the pressure heats up on the contenders. This week was another big one for the College Football Play-off, with a new number one side and a contender falling to an unranked opponent. Let’s look at the ten talking points from the past weekend.

1) LSU Roll Past Auburn

The LSU Tigers are the form team of the 2019 college football season, and claimed yet another landmark victory, this time over ninth ranked Auburn 23-20. This wasn’t a vintage LSU performance, but the win is all the matters as they look ahead to a massive matchup with second ranked Alabama in two weeks time.

Joe Burrow put up 321 yards with a passing and rushing touchdown were enough to propel them to victory. Auburn lead with their defense and they did enough to slow Burrow, but ultimately it wasn’t quite enough as true freshman Bo Nix struggled again.

2) Joe Burrow and LSU Back on Top

LSU led by Joe Burrow are the ultimate redemption story. LSU have been a sleeping giant for a long time now, but have now overtaken Alabama for the top ranking by only two points. Joe Burrow, a transfer from Ohio State, has rocketed from an average quarterback to a national leader and potential first round draft pick.

Both were receiving attention going into the season, but nobody would have predicted they would overcome Texas, Florida and Auburn to be 8-0. They are a very close challenger to Alabama this year, and even if they lose to the Crimson Tide they have a good chance at the College Football Play-off.

3) Michigan Get First Statement Win of 2019

The knock on Michigan in recent years has been a lack of statement wins from the team. Just as the pressure was mounting on head coach Jim Harbaugh they finally silenced some of the doubters with a 45-14 mauling of eighth ranked Notre Dame.

The stats didn’t look good for much maligned QB Shea Patterson, however a massive night for their rushing attack of Hassan Haskins and Zach Charbonnet played big to secure this massive win for the team. After their loss to Wisconsin earlier this season this is a win they can use to propel them through the rest of the year.

4) Notre Dame Will Struggle to Recover

The Fighting Irish went into this game feeling confident, ranked eighth and their only loss being a close defeat to third ranked Georgia. That loss to Georgia doesn’t look quite as good as they have now since lost themselves.

This loss to Michigan might be a bigger hammer-blow to recover from. They now sit at 5-2 and have dropped to 16th in the latest AP Top 25 polls. They have a favourable end to the season, but this was their last chance to secure a big win and put themselves in the College Football Play-off.

5) Oklahoma College Football Play-off Hopes Shattered

The biggest surprise of the weekend, and maybe the season so far was fifth ranked Oklahoma falling to unranked Kansas State 48-41. The Oklahoma offense has been flying all season, but this time they couldn’t do enough to save them after a poor defensive performance.

Kansas State made it very difficult for Oklahoma and exploited their defensive frailties, and this now leaves Oklahoma with a tough task to make the play-off. Five teams are still unbeaten and their one loss doesn’t compare favourably to their rivals. They need to win out now to stand any chance.

oklahoma-kansas-state

6) Chase Young Standout Performer

A lot of the college football media attention surrounding Ohio State has centered on Quarterback Justin Fields, but within NFL circles it’s Defensive End Chase Young they have been talking about. The junior has a good chance of being the first overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, and after this past weekend it’s easy to see why.

Ohio State pummeled 13th ranked Wisconsin 38-7, but the standout of the game was Young, with four sacks. Young now leads the nation with 12 sacks, and has many NFL scouts saying he’s the best Ohio State defensive player to declare in years.

7) Unbeaten Sides Finally Getting Respect

Outside of the top five LSU, Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson and Penn State there’s a number of fellow unbeaten sides who are finally getting some respect. Baylor, Minnesota and SMU sit unbeaten are are now all in the top 15.

Baylor is 7-0 in 12th, Minnesota is 8-0 in 13th and SMU is 8-0 in 15th. For these three schools this is unknown territory in recent seasons, and they will have neutral college football fans rooting for them all season to see how high they can climb the rankings.

8) Ohio State Entrenched in Top Four

After initially being on the outside looking in, Ohio State have looked strong all year and now look to have a good chance at the College Football Play-off. They are currently third in the nation, having profited from Georgia and now Oklahoma both losing games.

Justin Fields has been imperious since transferring from Georgia this season, and this defense is loaded with NFL talent. Back-to back games against Penn State and Michigan to end the year is where we’ll see the true indicator for this team. If they can beat both they will be second ranked and looking very good.

9) Clemson Silences Some Doubters With Win

Clemson have been an enigma so far this season. The defending national champions have struggled at times, but remain unbeaten. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence has struggled this season. This past weekend they finally looked back to their normal level, demolishing Boston College 59-7.

Despite remaining unbeaten they have slipped from first to fourth in the rankings this year. They should win the four remaining games and their superiority in the ACC should make it easier for them to remain in the play-off places.

10) Week Ten AP Top 25 Rankings

The latest AP Top 25 rankings are here, and we have a new number one. After their win over Auburn LSU have now leapfrogged Alabama, by a massive two points. Ohio State are very close behind in third, with Clemson a little further back in fourth.

Penn State rise to fifth as Oklahoma dropped to tenth with their loss. Oregon and Utah are the other big winners, moving into seventh and ninth respectively. Michigan rise to 14th whilst Wisconsin drops to 18th now at 6-2. Kansas State jump into the top 25 in 22nd after their big win, with Memphis and San Diego State the other debutants in the rankings.

That wraps up my latest review of week nine of the college football season, if you have any thoughts on this piece feel free to comment below or find me on Twitter @JWjournalism. Finally, a massive thank you to everyone who read my blog I massively appreciate it!

Why Are Arsenal So Bad At Game Management?

Sunday 27th October 2019. The Emirates Stadium in North London. The home side Arsenal are 2-0 up inside ten minutes thanks to Sokratis and David Luiz. This for most teams would be game over. Playing against an in-form but inferior Crystal Palace, this is almost certainly over. This is Arsenal however, a side perennially known for bottling it in recent seasons.

The conventional wisdom 2-0 up at home would be to sit back and become more defensive, whilst quickly hitting Palace on the counter attack. Sadly defense is not an Arsenal strong point, as they at times appear as porous as a wet sponge. Of course the game ends 2-2, and the most revelatory thing is that Arsenal fans are not surprised at all. They are used to these letdowns. Unfortunately for fans of this once proud club, the problems are not just with the defense.

The man stealing unwanted headlines is club captain Granit Xhaka, who reacted to fan displeasure with him by antagonising them as he walked off. He is a figure who splits fans, with some sticking up for him whilst others call for his head. He has been inconsistent at best since joining the club in the summer of 2016.

granit-xhaka-arsenal-fans

Xhaka shows his obvious displeasure with Arsenal fans after they booed him as he was substituted. Is his relationship with the fans now irreparable? Photo: Michael Zemanek/BPI/Shutterstock.

The defensive midfielder often fails to support the defense, instead leaving them exposed. Many fans, pundits and commentators regularly lament the fact the Arsenal midfield is often nowhere to be seen, leaving an already bad defense outnumbered and overrun. In ten Premier League games this season they have conceded 14 goals, six more than Leicester even. Last season they let in 51 goals in 38 games, 29 more than the league best Liverpool.

People who often watch Arsenal play will point to a midfield often in the wrong position and this will frequently force Xhaka to foul to stop potential attacks. Outside of his debut season Xhaka has been in the top 20 for most fouls committed every season, and currently leads with 22 fouls from ten games. This constant fouling by proxy leads to cards, and the Swiss international averages no less than 12 yellow cards a season.

Fans were wrong to loudly boo their own captain, but they feel frustrated with this poor performances over recent seasons. When coming to conclusions on Xhaka we should remember that in the same summer he arrived Chelsea bought N’Golo Kante for £3m less.

ngolo-kante

Xhaka is by no means the only player struggling in the Arsenal midfield, with players like Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi  have also played poorly at times. The difference is that in the defensive midfield role they often show what fans desire most, tenacity and a fighting spirit often lacking from recent Arsenal sides.

Manager Unai Emery shoulders a lot of the blame also. The Spaniard has yet to noticeably improve this team in 18 months despite spending £207.9m in that time. Reports have come out saying that some players are left confused by the tactics Emery adopts and what their roles in the team are. Star striker Alex Lacazette is liking Instagram posts calling for Emery to be sacked.

At the other end of the pitch, the attacking talent at the club is often forced to feed on scraps because of a lack of creativity from the midfield. Pierre Emerick Aubameyang is a Premier League Golden Boot winner, Alex Lacazette is highly rated worldwide and Nicolas Pepe is a £72m pound player. We’ve scored 15 goals this season, 17 less than Manchester City. We’ve scored one less than rivals Tottenham, who currently sit 12th.

newcastle-arsenal-110819zf

Arsenal players celebrate Pierre Emerick Aubameyang’s winner against Newcastle on the opening day. The team have struggled to score since. Photo: Reuters.

This is because we lack creativity in the midfield. Xhaka and Guendouzi are defensive in nature, and loan signing Dani Ceballos is more of a link up player then creative outlet. We’ve missed the number ten role Aaron Ramsey played excellently for years, and our only true player who can replace him appears to be being frozen out by the club.

Mesut Ozil is a controversial topic amongst Arsenal fans. He is just as divisive a topic as Xhaka, but what is of no doubt is that at his best he’s a world class creative midfielder.  He has 52 assists and 32 goals in 167 games, but has found his role diminish under Emery. He played 26 times in the final Arsene Wenger season, for a combined 2,164 minutes. Last season this dropped slightly to 24 appearances for 1,741 minutes.

After a year of assessing him Emery has made his feelings on the player clear. He has made one Premier League appearance in ten games, and has been left out the matchday squad for seven of those fixtures. The ambiguity surrounding his disappearance under Emery has left fans frustrated with him and the future for Ozil at the club looks bleak.

Many use the £350 000 pounds a week wages and languid playing style to ridicule Ozil, but at a time where Arsenal lack creativity he appears our best option to rectify this. Two important decisions Emery has made in his first 18 months are firstly to back Granit Xhaka, making him captain and integral to the team, and ostracizing Mesut Ozil. Will these two decisions put Emery in jeopardy come the end of the season?

College Football Week Six Preview

The weeks keep ticking by in the 2019 college football season, with another group of games that could have play-off ramifications further down the line. This weekend has some good under the radar games to pique interest also. Let’s look at the main talking points heading into week six.

1) Auburn – Florida Preview

The biggest matchup of the week is this Auburn – Florida game, with giant SEC implications. Both sides go into this one with plenty of confidence, and a 5-0 record. Auburn travels to Florida as favourites, having faced a much tougher schedule.

Bo Nix has been solid as a true freshman starter, but will face a tough task against a top 20 defense like Florida’s. For the Gators the game will depend a lot on backup Kyle Trask, making his third start, having played well against limited opposition. Both co-lead their SEC conference, with the winner closing in on a play-off berth.

2) Can Auburn do the Unthinkable in the SEC West?

The SEC West can legitimately claim to be the toughest conference in college football, but if Auburn can win against Florida could they claim the conference crown over Alabama? This has previously been an Alabama stronghold, but this year they face competition from Auburn and LSU.

Auburn have so far beat two top 25 teams on route to 5-0, and another win against tenth ranked Florida would boost them into play-off contention. They face a brutal schedule this season, with LSU, Georgia and Alabama to face. If they only lose to Georgia and beat the rest they will claim an unlikely SEC West title.

3) Iowa – Michigan Preview

Another massive conference matchup is this Big Ten game as Iowa travel to Michigan. The Wolverines are the traditional power in this game, but will go into it as underdogs after an underwhelming start to the season.

Iowa have started well at 4-0, co-leading the Big Ten West with Wisconsin. The Badgers brushed Michigan aside two weeks ago, and Iowa will feel confident heading into this game. Their defense ranks fifth in the nation, and Michigan have struggled on offense this season. Despite the home advantage Iowa should feel confident in this one.

4) Michigan Need Big Home Win

The result this weekend will have big implications for the rest of the Michigan season. They go into it 3-1 but have yet to convince in any of their wins. Their loss was in-conference to Wisconsin, putting them already a game behind Ohio State and Penn State in the Big Ten East.

Another conference loss to Iowa will likely take them out of the running for the title, and at two losses will make it almost impossible to secure a top ten ranking or featured bowl game. The Jim Harbaugh hot seat would only increase, so a lot rests on this game.

5) Michigan State – Ohio State Preview

Keeping things in the Big Ten East, this matchup of Michigan State and Ohio State will mean a lot going forward. Ohio State will feel confident after a 5-0 start and being at home, but 25th ranked Michigan State won’t roll over in this rivalry game.

This will be an interesting game, with the Ohio State offense, led by Quarterback Justin Fields, is currently eighth in the nation for total offense. Michigan State has the seventh ranked defense however. They key for Michigan State will be scoring points on an Ohio State defense that is second in the nation, allowing less than 225 yards per game.

6) Potential Banana Skin for Ohio State

As I mentioned above Ohio State will be favourites for this game, but don’t discount Michigan State. They currently co-lead the conference with Ohio State and Penn State, and are a ranked team worthy of respect.

Their defense is a top ten unit in the country, allowing just over 250 yards per game. Their edge rushers Kenny Willekes and Raequan Williams lead the team with 7.5 sacks between them in five games. Ohio State is also coming off a statement win against Nebraska, and with a rivalry game this weekend they may slip up at home.

7) Under the Radar Games to Watch

Some games that won’t receive massive hype but will provide plenty of intrigue include a likely lopsided affair as Utah State travel to fifth ranked LSU. This isn’t a matchup on paper, but I’ve included it as we’ll see potential NFL Draft top ten pick, Utah State QB Jordan Love take on a very good LSU defense, with comparisons with rising star Joe Burrow likely.

The Pac-12 provides some important games, with 4-1 California travelling to 13th ranked 3-1 Oregon. After that is 15th ranked Washington travelling to face a struggling 2-3 Stanford team.

8) ‘Fair Pay to Play ‘ Acts Building

The much talked about ‘Fair Pay to Play’ Act introduced by California made headlines as it was officially signed this week on The Shop, and other states are now taking a stance on this divisive issue. Florida state representative Kionne McGhee proposed a similar bill this week that if passed, would go into effect July 1st 2020.

This has been followed by news that former Ohio State receiver and current U.S House of Representatives politician Anthony Gonzalez is proposing federal legislation allowing college athletes to earn money through endorsement deals nationally. After much blustering from the NCAA, their patriarchy may be coming to an end.

9) Coaches Already on the Hot Seat

The firing of Chris Ash at Rutgers last weekend was the first of the year, but many college coaches are feeling the pressure after poor starts to the season. USC head coach Clay Helton was almost fired last year, but is unlikely to survive this season. They have a 3-2 record and face a tough schedule, starting with ninth ranked Notre Dame this weekend.

Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt will be another facing being fired, with a 1-3 start hard to come back from. Coming from Alabama he was supposed to resurrect this historic program, but they have fallen even further away under him.

10) Nick Saban Doesn’t Follow Rankings

The Alabama coach made headlines this week, saying that the rankings don’t matter until the end of the season. This is a classic Saban quote, straight from the Bill Belichick school of media quotes. It does show once again however the relentless nature both show in coaching.

Saban has already cemented himself as a legend of college football, but his relentless desire to improve is a big reason why Alabama has become the dominant force in college football for a decade now.

That wraps up my preview for week six of the season, if you have any thoughts on these points feel free to comment below or find me on Twitter @JWjournalism. Finally, a massive thank you to everyone who read this blog I really appreciate it!

Are Tottenham in Crisis?

As an Arsenal fan this next line is a tough one to write, but over the past five years Tottenham have overtaken us as kings of North London. For the past three years Spurs have finished above Arsenal, feasting on Champions League football as the Gunners make do with the Europa League.

After moving into their new 62 000 seater stadium last year, the future should be looking rosy. Aside from their Champions League heroics last season, the results on the pitch haven’t met expectation. After being a model of how to run a club well, are Tottenham now in crisis?

Pundits and fans alike have begun questioning Tottenham, after a hangover from a poor end to last season continues. They sit sixth in the Premier League after seven games, already five points behind Manchester City and ten behind Liverpool. Tottenham are not competing with the likes of City and Liverpool, but they cemented themselves as the third best team in the league in recent seasons.

stream_img

Mauricio Pochettino and his Tottenham players celebrate their historic progression to the Champions League final. The feeling around the club has changed massively in the six months since this photo. Photo: Press Association

Now, even that distinction is under threat. Arsenal are currently above them, but haven’t played well. Chelsea are under a transfer ban and have an inexperienced manager, and Manchester United have their worst squad in years. It’s not that these three clubs have stepped up, it appears at this stage that Spurs have regressed to their level. Currently the third best team in the league is none of these, but Leicester and based on performances they can stay there.

The results haven’t looked good the entire year. Of the 24 Premier League games they’ve played in 2019, their record is: 11 wins, 4 draws and 10 losses. That form puts them 9th in the table, with the performances matching these stats.

Tottenham have struggled through a tumultuous summer. Key players Christian Eriksen, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen are all out of contract next summer, with manager Mauricio Pochettino using them sparingly this season. The club could be allowing £175m to walk out the door for nothing next year, and the squad has suffered.

0_gettyimages-1128790942-1

Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen smile in happier times. Now both, along with Vertonghen’s defensive partner Toby Alderweireld, are likely to leave next summer for free. Photo: Jorg Schuler/Getty Images.

Tottenham have always been punching above their weight with their performances, and this is reflected in their overall squad depth. The likes of Juan Foyth, Serge Aurier and Victor Wanyama haven’t stepped up. Spurs have had a small squad in recent years, and their suffering for it now. The first eleven can match anyone in the league, but with contract sagas and injuries the squad rotation players haven’t played well enough to keep them competitive.

The one shining light for Spurs in 2019 has been their run to the Champions League final. Despite losing 1-0 to Liverpool, even making the final was a massive achievement. This season they can’t let that distract them, having started this years competition poorly. Throwing away a 2-0 lead away at Olympiacos was compounded by a humiliating 7-2 home defeat to Bayern Munich this week.

The reason the squad depth is an issue is because of their frugal chairman Daniel Levy. He is renowned for being stubborn in the transfer market, who doesn’t vary from his own valuations of players. This is why the club didn’t sell Eriksen, Vertonghen or Alderweireld in the summer.

Screenshot (4)

Spurs net spend figures are skewed by their big spending this summer. Without this, they would be a mid-table club in terms of net spend. Photo: Transfermarkt.

Since 2015 Spurs have a net spend of -£120m, with £90m of that coming this summer. The big money moves for Tanguy Ndombele (£54m) and Giovani Lo Celso (£55m) have covered up the fact that for the previous four years their net spend was -£30m, with the club famously going over 500 days without signing a player. Compared to their rivals: Chelsea (-£142m, Arsenal (-£335m) and Man Utd (-£554m) they haven’t spent to their level and this is hurting the team.

Another factor behind the poor performances is the seemingly obvious disharmony in the squad. Tottenham are known to be frugal with the wage budget, offering players below market value wages with big incentives. This has worked up until now, as the players have bought into the project at the club, but this season it appears the wheels are falling off.

There is the ongoing contract issues with Eriksen, Alderweireld and Vertonghen, all of whom are likely to leave next summer for free. Danny Rose publicly said he wanted to leave in the summer, and Hugo Lloris has previously said he will leave if Pochettino goes. The players know they could leave the club to win trophies and earn higher wages, so it will be tough for the club to keep their best players if they don’t win this season.

10491292-1

Tottenham players look dejected on a humiliating night for the club. Losing 7-2 at home to Bayern Munich only heightens the pressure on this team. Photo: Press Association.

The reason I say this season is because it’s not just the players other clubs have been scouting. It’s manager Mauricio Pochettino. He was heavily linked with both the Real Madrid and Manchester United jobs this year, and it’s well known he has a rocky relationship with Levy. Much like the players, he wants to take the next step in his career and the club don’t seem to be able to satisfy his ambitions anymore.

He’s been with the club for five years now, and some in the media have questioned whether it’s simply the end of his cycle. Maybe the players are not listening to him as intently as they have in previous years, or maybe he has grown weary of challenging but ultimately failing to win trophies.

This season feels like a big turning point, with the current trajectory the club is on isn’t healthy long-term. They look to have slipped back this season, although it’s still early, with off-pitch turmoil only compounding their problems. It’s unclear who will still be at the club next season, with a season of regression only making it more likely key players or management would leave. Could the Pochettino era be coming to an end?

College Football Week Five Review

This past weekend felt like the truest indicator so far of where the major teams are at this season. Five weeks in and some secured statement wins, some recovered well and some struggled in victory. Let’s take a look at some of the main talking points from yet another exciting weekend in college football.

1) Ohio State Flashes Potential on National Stage

Ohio State laid their biggest indicator of the season that this team is for real. They throttled a good Nebraska side 48-7, excelling on all phases of the ball. The offense always gets the headlines, but Justin Fields deserves praise for another stellar performance since transferring from Georgia in the summer.

15-21 for 212 yards and 3 TD’s, along with 177 rushing yards for Running Back J.K Dobbins shows how dominant they were. The defense did even better, limiting Nebraska QB Adrian Martinez to 47 yards passing and three interceptions. Now 5-0, they find themselves in the play-off places for the first time this season.

2) Clemson Battle Past North Carolina

From convincing to unconvincing wins, as top ranked Clemson came very close to a loss against a resurgent North Carolina. They didn’t look good in this game, with sophomore phenom Trevor Lawrence struggling again.

The Clemson team is an embarrassment of riches, but being a failed two-point conversion away from losing doesn’t inspire confidence. They’ve dropped to second in the AP Top 25 poll, and will need to regroup quickly as the pressure mounts.

3) Notre Dame Put Georgia Loss Behind Them

Notre Dame recovered from a tough loss to Georgia with the perfect rebuttal in this potential banana skin. Virginia came into this game full of confidence, but Notre Dame proved too strong and deserved their 35-20 victory.

Notre Dame relied on Running Back Tony Jones Jr on offense, with 131 rushing yards and 3 TD’s proving vital. On the defensive side of the ball, Defensive End Julian Okwara had a career day with three of the teams eight sacks, as well as forcing a fumble in one of their five turnovers. The defense played lights out and deserves national recognition for this performance.

4) Washington Back in Pac-12 Mix

Washington have recovered well from a tough early season loss to California, swatting aside USC 28-14 to regain ground in the Pac-12. Salvon Ahmed had a big day at Running Back, with 153 yards and touchdown in a vital win.

This win jumps them back up to second in the Pac-12 North. Whilst any faint dreams of a national title chance are long gone, they find themselves 15th in the AP Polls. If they can win out from here on out they will have earned a top ten berth and a prominent bowl game.

5) Penn State Shutout Maryland

Penn State responded perfectly to their first challenge this season, mauling a high-powered Maryland offense. The defense stood out in this game, keeping a previously top ranked scoring offense to zero points. A previously unstoppable Maryland team couldn’t get anything going at all, holding Quarterback Josh Jackson to 65 passing yards and two interceptions.

For Penn State their offense had no problem scoring points, with sophomore Quarterback Sean Clifford going off with over 450 combined yards and four touchdowns in this rout. This is a big win for Penn State and they have kept themselves in the hunt.

6) Other Key Results This Week

After such a disappointing loss last weekend Michigan responded in the perfect manner, dismantling a poor Rutgers team. Much criticised Quarterback Shea Patterson responded with three passing touchdowns and a rushing TD in a 52-0 rout. The only negative for the Wolverines was their running game struggling again.

Arizona State beat 15th ranked California 24-17, which is a pivotal win for them after a slow start to their Pac-12 season. They are on the outside looking in right now, but this is a massive win and will give them confidence going forward.

7) Stand Out Week Five Performers

For the standout performer we can’t overlook Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith. The third head of their receiving core behind Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs went off against Ole Miss, with 274 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

Another receiver who impressed is Oklahoma’s CeeDee Lamb, who showed an incredible turn and burst of speed on a 71 yard touchdown against Texas Tech, ending up with 185 yards and three touchdowns. He’s a first round prospect in a loaded wide receiver class this year.

8) Heisman Contenders Update

Now we’re well into the season, the key contenders for the 2019 Heisman Trophy are emerging. Alabama star Tua Tagovailoa is having a monster season, currently second in the nation with over 1700 yards in only five games. He’s also protecting the football, with 23 touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Of the rest Joe Burrow is the outside bet, having surprised everyone with the impressive start he’s had. Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts has played lights out this season, going for over 1200 yards passing and over 440 yards rushing in four games. Tua remains the favourite, but there’s plenty of contenders keeping him honest.

9) AP Top 25 Rankings

The latest rankings going into week six have been released, with the mild surprise that Alabama have overtaken Clemson for the top spot. It’s an understandable move after their performances last weekend. After their impressive win Ohio State jumped LSU for fourth and the final play-off place.

Further down, Notre Dame are the only other team to move in the top ten, vaulting Florida for ninth. Washington improve two places to 15th, with Utah, UCF and Michigan all moving up to 17th,18th and 19th respectively. California, USC and Kansas State are the big losers, all dropping out of the rankings this week.

10) First Coaching Casualty of the Year

Rutgers head coach Chris Ash was the first casualty of the 2019 season. After his teams 52-0 demolition against Michigan he was shown the door after three years in charge. His 8-32 record is poor, along with a 3-26 record in the Big Ten conference. Offensive coordinator John McNulty has also been fired after their 1-3 start.

Tight Ends coach Nunzio Campanile will take the interim head coach job for the season. Ash had previously been defensive coordinator for the 2014 national champion Ohio State Buckeyes. Early favourites to replace him include Greg Schiano, Mike Elko and Jeff Monken.

That wraps up the main talking points from another week of college football, if you have any thoughts on this points feel free to comment below or find me on Twitter @JWjournalism. Finally, a big thank you to everyone who read this blog I really appreciate it!

College Football Week Five Preview

After four weeks we look to have an established order at the top of the college football world, with Clemson and Alabama at the top and the rest snapping at their heels. Week five doesn’t have the prominent matchup’s from last weekend, but there is plenty of intrigue in this weeks slate of games. Let’s preview the main talking points for the weekend ahead.

1) Notre Dame – Virginia Preview

Notre Dame aim to fight back this weekend against a good Virginia team in what will be another tough game for them. They can take a lot of positives from last weekend as they matched up well with third ranked Georgia.

Virginia on the other hand roll into Notre Dame stadium 4-0 and leading the ACC Coastal conference. They did struggle last weekend to beat lowly Old Dominion, but have otherwise impressed this season. Their defense is a top 15 unit, led by star Cornerback Bryce Hall. The tenth ranked Fighting Irish barely have a top 50 offense, so this game should be closer than many expect.

2) Bryce Hall Key to Virginia Hopes

Virginia are living up to the pre-season hype as an unlikely ACC Coastal champs, and much of that is because of their defense. Their unit ranks 14th in the country through four games, keeping opposing teams to 263 yards per game.

Their key component is Cornerback Bryce Hall, a senior many NFL scouts are high on.  Many predict he will be a late first round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, he’s that highly rated. For this game Hall will be focused on Notre Dame’s leading receiver Chase Claypool, in what will be a key matchup in this game.

3) USC – Washington Preview

Another top 25 matchup is this all Pac-12 affair between 21st ranked USC and 17th ranked Washington. Both sides have flashed potential this season, but have also been inconsistent. They both enter at 3-1, looking for a statement Pac-12 win.

Washington need to win to remain in contention for the Pac-12 North, having already lost to California. Transfer QB Jacob Eason has impressed, already throwing for over 1000 yards in four games. USC meanwhile have suffered from injury problems to key positions, none more so than at the Quarterback. They enter this game with third-string QB Matt Fink.

4) Matt Fink – Michael Pittman Jr Connection Key for USC

USC will travel into Washington as slight underdogs, and the key for them will be the connection between QB Matt Fink and receiver Michael Pittman Jr. Fink made his debut last week in an upset win against Utah, impressing with 350 yards and 3 TD’s.

He immediately made a connection with senior Pittman Jr, who went off for 232 yards and a touchdown. Utah has a good defense so to shred them like this was impressive. Washington has a pretty good defense, and in a key road game they need Fink to find Pittman often.

5) Penn State – Maryland Preview

Opening the college football weekend is this intriguing Friday night matchup between Penn State and Maryland. Penn State travel to Maryland 3-0 and ranked 12th in the nation, but face a tough matchup against the Terrapins.

Maryland had broken into the top 25 before being upset by Temple, and will have used their bye week to regroup and refocus for this game. This will be intriguing as Penn State goes in as favourites with a good defense, but Maryland has a top ten offense that has 21 TD’s in only three games.

6) First Real Test for Penn State

Penn State has opened the year strongly, however they have yet to be seriously tested. They walked over Idaho and Buffalo, and struggled against a plucky Pitt team. We will learn a lot about this Penn State team here.

Their defense, led by Linebacker Micah Parsons have limited opponents to 30 combined points from three games, but face a tough test stopping this Maryland offense.  If they can do this they have a good chance of winning . It’s hard to gauge where their offense is with the opponents they’ve played, so this will be another interesting matchup.

7) Other Games to Watch Out for

Aside from the games mentioned above, there is plenty of games for college football fans to feast on this weekend. The College Gameday crew head to Lincoln, Nebraska for an exciting matchup between Ohio State and Nebraska. The Cornhuskers have put up 152 points in four games, but face fifth ranked Ohio State and their incredible defense, led by potential number one NFL Draft pick Chase Young.

Seventh ranked Auburn face Mississippi State, hoping to avoid slipping up after a massive win last weekend against Texas A&M. If they carry over their early season form they will be contending for the SEC Championship game and a shot at the College Football Play-Off.

8) ‘Fair Pay to Play’ Act Causing Trouble

The proposed ‘Fair Pay to Play’ Act has created plenty of headlines since it was announced several weeks ago. The California bill would allow athletes to profit from the use of their name, likeness and image without facing NCAA penalty.

The bill has been supported by the likes of LeBron James and Bernie Sanders, but the NCAA and California universities are opposed to it. The NCAA have already threatened that 20 California schools would be ineligible for it’s competition if this comes to fruition. This is a seismic moment for players and is the strongest challenge to NCAA rules to date.

9) Tua Tagovailoa Almost Became A USC Trojan

Star Alabama Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa made headlines this week by announcing on the Dan Patrick radio show that he almost transferred to USC in 2017. Tagovailoa was a true freshman at the time behind Jalen Hurts, before becoming the hero by replacing Hurts and winning the National Championship for Alabama.

Tagovailoa said he wanted to transfer so that his parents could see him play and USC was his childhood team. Tua will likely be the first Quarterback taken in the 2020 NFL Draft, although many USC fans will now wonder what if, especially with their spate of QB injuries currently.

10) D’Eriq King to Stay at Houston After All

The most dramatic story of this week was the news on Monday that Houston QB D’Eriq King was redshirting this year and transferring, only for him to come out hours later and deny this story from his dad. King and star receiver Keith Corbin will redshirt, but aim to return to Houston next year.

This is a story that divides opinion, with some questioning if both won’t still transfer at the end of the year. Houston will struggle this year without them, but if they do return next year they will be looking to take the step up to the NFL.

That wraps up this preview of the week five college football slate, if you have any questions about these talking points feel free to comment below or find me on Twitter @JWjournalism. Finally, a massive thank you to everyone who read this article I really appreciate it!
